The Learning Zone

'The day is what you make it'

Bringing an idea to life

The Learning Zone is a work experience construction unit designed to give an exclusive hands on learning experience and insight into the construction industry. Our highly skilled trainers assist the programme to suit the needs of each individual.  Learners spend time finding out more about the careers available construction as well on the job training.

We are currently working with schools to offer an inclusive, bespoke package for learners with special educational needs. We are passionate about improving and promoting quality of life to ensure that all learners have an opportunity to explore working in the construction industry regardless of their differences.

Feedback is important to us, here are a few comments below by learners on our programmes:

'I have learnt how to paint and decorate to a high standard. This is something I couldn't do before!

As well as the chance to try out practical hands-on skills, this programme helps young people develop important skills such as teamwork, budgeting, communication, negotiation, determination and resilience.

  •  it will enable them to show their enthusiasm to a potential future employer

  • It can help them to identify their own strengths as well as learning valuable new skills

  • If they have impressed the employer, they might offer them a place on an apprenticeship scheme, or even a job

  • Work experience placements look great on CVs and university applications

The learning zone main goal is help learners bring

Partnerships

Our goal is to create long-term relationships between  secondary schools ,colleges and training providers in our place-based construction unit. Through these long-term relationships we facilitate construction and built environment led sessions and activities, supported by industry skilled trainers. The sessions and activities can include an introduction to industry, curriculum-based lessons, work experience opportunities and support for applying for apprenticeships or further education.

Pathways to Professional Careers

Apprenticeships are an increasingly popular pathway to access high-value professional careers, but these opportunities disproportionately benefit students from middle or higher socio-economic backgrounds. To help more young people succeed as professionals, we have developed our innovative Pathways to Professional Careers programme, targeting young people aged 16-18 interested in exploring higher-level apprenticeships. Each young person is supported on a 1-2-1 basis by a dedicated coach. Through employer-led workshops, practice interviews and mock assessment centres, we help young people develop the employability skills employers are seeking so they feel prepared and confident when faced with what can be rigorous apprenticeship recruitment processes.

Building Opportunities

Young people who have been not in employment, education or training (NEET) for a sustained period usually face significant barriers to entering employment. Our Building Opportunities programme creates pathways to success through building long-term trusted relationships in the local community.

In recognition that short, one-off interventions are unlikely to achieve sustainable outcomes for young people furthest from the employment market, we take a relationship-based approach centred on 1-2-1 coaching support and ongoing, meaningful employer engagement. Integral to our approach is the creation of Individual Action Plans (IAP) based on the interests, strengths, and goals of young people. All plans are bespoke and tailored to the needs of each young person. They include:

• Employability support, including employer-led CV workshops and mock interviews

• 1-2-1 coaching – practical job search support and confidence building

• Hands-on practical activities - e.g. carpentry tasters that help young people develop technical skills

• World-of-work experiences such as site-visits

• Supported introductions to local opportunities, including ‘Live Vacancy’ events – employers present current job opportunities to young people, providing information and application advice

• Level 1 Health & Safety and CSCS card training, where relevant

• On-going post-Employment/Education support to ensure progression is sustained
